It is very likely that you have heard people say things like “your priority should be your education” and “you have to make sure that you go to a good college” all of your life, regardless of whether it came from your parents, teachers or mentors. With this said, one thing that statements like these do not really get across is why you should go to college and the importance of a college education during the road ahead. To put it simply, there are so many reasons why college is incredibly important and it is hard to fit them all into one simple article. But, here are some of the biggest reasons why going to college is so important.

Today’s Job Market

In addition to the previously mentioned statements regarding education, you may have also heard that you need to go to college, so you can find a well-paying job in the feature. The thing is, they are not wrong. According to the Georgetown Public Policy Institute’s report on job growth and education requirements, by the year 2020, 65% of all jobs will require some sort of postsecondary education, whether it be a university education or schooling from a trade school. In regards to college degrees, the report all suggests that 35% of all job openings will require at least some sort of bachelor’s degree. You should really keep in mind that 2020 is not that far away, and, depending on your age, you may be a high-school graduate or incoming college freshman during this time, when getting your post-secondary education will be more important than ever. All in all, getting a college degree may be crucial to your future financial success, and if you want a stable income that grants you expendable funds, going to college is a no-brainer.

Finding Your Passion

When entering college, some people have no idea what they want to do in their career or in life in general, and this is perfectly okay. For many, college is the place where they find their passion and decide what to do with their lives. This can happen in many ways. Some people take an elective class and really fall in love with the course material and eventually decide to go into the field that the course material is based on. This is one of the reasons why colleges have students take most of the general education classes in the first two years before going into the classes related to their major. Other people join clubs that change their life by giving them a new passion. In college, there are a large number of different groups and clubs to join, from activist groups, religious groups and even organizations that run student media like the college newspaper or radio station. These clubs and organizations can sometimes shift someone’s interests and convince them to change their major and goals altogether. Contrary to popular belief, changing majors in college is completely fine. Some students even change their major in the last two years of college. This is perfectly acceptable as it is related to one of the best reasons to go to college, to try new things and possibly find their passion in life.

Finding New Friends and Encountering New Cultures

A less academic reason to go to college is that many students make a lot of friends in college. In fact, while in college, many students make friends that they have for the rest of their lives. Many say this is due to the large variety of people that attend certain colleges. While in college, you will probably meet people from backgrounds and cultures that you have never interacted with before. If you are lucky enough, your college may even have a study abroad program that could allow you to go to other countries to learn and meet people living in different parts of the world. In short, you are going to meet different people from college, whether they be from different cultures within your region or from an entirely different country. This will help make you a more cultured person and may result in lifelong companions.

As stated before, these are not the only reasons why going to college is so important, just some of the highlights.
