Tips

Seek to understand the dynamics of sea, its currents and undercurrents.  Learn about the ships you would like to work on.  Look for the min safety manning, these are often the key staff.  Does the ship have any new tech, such as anti-roll or propulsion by LNG.

University/College

Historicaly Able Bodied seamen learnt what they needed to learn, at sea, taking hire often as young as from 15 years old.  Today some have a specialty skills.  On a ship this is the rank before an officer.

Specialisation

Consider a degree in Maritime service or Engineering.  However, unless you are looking for a long-term career as a Captain (called Master Mariner) or a Chief Engineer, there are not many sailors with university degrees.

Highschool

General Education.  However, today ships are like factories.  Some fishing vessels have production line and even onboard  packaging.  Many ships regardless of type have electronics so advanced they require an electrician to sail with them as part of the standard crew.

Hobbies

Swimming is important, in an emergency you need to be able to swim during all kinds of temperatures and weather.  Fishing can be a pleasant hobby to pass time.  In these days there may be video onboard and maybe even internet.  Travel exp can be useful for crew-change.
